Life Behind the Scenes at the Historic Y.O. Ranch

“It was the summer of 1977, and I was at the Texas Capitol researching voting patterns for the political campaign I was working for,” writes author Norma Schreiner as she describes her meeting with rancher Charles Schreiner III. “I decided to drop by the office of one of my favorite house members, Jim Nugent. . . . Before his staff could announce me, he was bellowing, ‘Norma, come in here. There’s someone I want you to meet.’”

So began the tempestuous, yet mostly good-natured relationship between the author and the man she often called “Charlie Three,” scion of the historic Schreiner ranching family of the Texas Hill Country. Charles Schreiner III was largely responsible for saving the Texas longhorn from extinction by founding the Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America in 1964. The first bull and cow registered belonged to Charlie, and he grew the association from its initial membership of thirty to having members throughout the world by the time of his death. Amazingly, he promoted the breed with not one, but two cattle drives of longhorns across modern day Texas.

Their subsequent marriage would last only two years, but that time would place her on the legendary Y.O. Ranch during the centennial of its founding in 1880. Since the 1950s, the ranch began to stock exotic animals for hunting and breeding purposes year-round, a practice that has since become vital to many Texas ranches’ economic survival. Schreiner would see Y.O. as one of the first Texas ranches to add a pair of giraffes that have descendants still on the ranch to this day. Schreiner, a sixth-generation Texan, was the fourth wife of Charles Schreiner III. In 1979, she became the first woman elected to the board of directors of a livestock association, the South Texas Longhorn Association.

Told with candor and good humor, Schreiner’s memoir, Eight Miles from the Front Gate: My Life on the Y.O. Ranch with Charles Schreiner III, of her time on the ranch and how those experiences shaped her life makes for entertaining and enlightening reading. Unfortunately, Schreiner passed away as the book was being published.  To speak for Schreiner, the Frontier Times Museum will welcome Harold Prasatik, Schreiner’s partner, to tell tales of what an amazing woman Schreiner was. The event is free and open to the public and will take place on Thursday, May 7th at the museum at 5:30 pm. The book will be available for sale at the museum. If you have read the book, you are welcome to join this lively discussion. The Frontier Times Museum is located at 510 13th Street in Bandera, Texas.

Video Presentation Explores the Liberation of a French Village in World War II

‍ ‍

Discover the remarkable story of the moment when American troops went against orders to liberate a small French village from Nazi occupation during World War II.  Karen Downing Ripley will present You Were There, Karen Beth, a video presentation she created from her podcast that tells the story of her unexpected visit to Plélo, a small village in the Brittany region of France. The story is deeply personal for Ripley because her father, Delbert Franklin Downing, was among the American soldiers who helped liberate the village from Nazi forces.

‍ ‍

As the daughter of an American liberator, Ripley was moved and surprised by the outpouring of gratitude shown by the people of Brittany in remembrance of the American soldiers who freed their community. She created her podcast to honor those who fought for the region’s freedom, and to share with fellow Americans the remarkable ways the villagers of Plélo continue to show gratitude 80 years later. The podcast is dedicated to Patton's Third Army, the 15th Cavalry Reconnaissance Group Troop B, the Allies, the French Resistance, and the citizens who fought for Brittany’s liberation from Nazi occupation.

‍ ‍

Ripley describes the project as a love letter to the people of Brittany to show her appreciation for the ways they still remember and honor the American soldiers who risked everything to save Plélo and help secure democracy for all. During the presentation, she shares the remarkable story of arriving in Plélo just days before the village’s annual liberation celebration. The synergy and providence of her unplanned arrival just days before the celebration was all the more unbelievable as she had traveled there to deliver her father’s military documents—records that detailed the events of the village’s liberation – unaware of the celebrations.

‍ ‍

The presentation is hosted jointly by the Lakehills Community Center and the Frontier Times Museum Speaker Series. Barbara Engel, President of the Lakehills Community Center, said, “You Were There, Karen Beth is an intimate storytelling podcast where host Karen Downing Ripley takes listeners on deeply personal journeys through pivotal moments in history and her own life.” Rebecca Norton, Executive Director of the Frontier Times Museum, added, “Each episode weaves together personal memoir with historical significance, creating compelling narratives that connect the past with the present.”

‍ ‍

The presentation will take place Thursday, March 19, at 5:00 p.m. It is free and open to the public and will be held at the Lakehills Community Center, located at 11225 Park Road 37 in Lakehills, Texas. For more information, visit the Lakehills Community Center website at https://lakehillscommunitycenter.org or the Frontier Times Museum website at www.frontiertimesmuseum.org.

Dedication Celebration

The long-awaited day is finally here, and we couldn't be more thrilled to share this moment with everyone! Our new Historical Marker has arrived, and it's a beautiful testament to the history of our 92-year-old museum. A special thank you goes out to the McMullan Family for their generous donation, which has allowed us to enhance our historic site and restore our Totem Pole to its original, vibrant colors.

Artist Logan Miles did a fantastic job reviving the totem pole in 2023, and now, with the marker in place, we can fully celebrate these important pieces of our heritage. We invite you all to join us for the unveiling of the new marker. It's a great opportunity to connect with the McMullan Family, meet the artist, and appreciate the totem pole and the historical marker together. We look forward to seeing you there!

BANDERA WAS ONCE KNOWN AS THE SWITZERLAND OF TEXAS:

MUSEUM DIRECTOR GIVES HISTORY OF TOURISM PRESENTATION

Rebecca Norton, Executive Director of the Frontier Times Museum, will present a slide show talk on Thursday, July 3rd. Norton’s presentation, The Switzerland of Texas, will explore early tourism in Bandera County and how the community has changed from being a primarily agricultural community to a tourist destination. The presentation will begin at 5:30 pm and is free and open to the public. Norton is proposing the founder of the museum, J. Marvin Hunter, may have been among the first to see the potential of Bandera County as a tourist mecca. He used his Bandera New Era and his magazine, the Frontier Times, to proclaim how beautiful and beneficial a visit to Bandera would be for one’s health and spiritual well-being.  When economic hardships fell on local ranchers, many looked to open their ranches as guest ranches, also known as dude ranches. The ranch owners marketed Bandera as the Cowboy Capital of the World and visitors began to flock to Bandera to stay on a ranch, wear cowboy and cowgirl clothing, ride horses and enjoy Bandera’s western flair.

The presentation is part of the Smithsonian Institution’s traveling exhibit, Crossroads: Changes in Rural America that is on display in the cafeteria at the Bandera Middle School. The presentation will take place on the cafeteria’s stage.  The Bandera Middle School is located at 1005 Cherry Street in Bandera, Texas.

Meet & Great with Author J. E. Weiner

Meet & Great with Author J. E. Weiner

Writer Sets Her Novel in Bandera

On the eve of the Civil War, Polish immigrants Marcin and Agnieszka Anderwald arrive in Bandera, Texas, seeking a fresh start in a new land of fertile soil and freedom. But their dreams quickly become nightmares when Marcin provokes a sinister specter hell-bent on revenge. A battle ensues for the hearts, minds, and souls of the Anderwalds and their extended family of immigrant outcasts, Arab camel wranglers, wounded warriors, and a songstress on the verge of madness. As the generations unfold, each must confront its darkest fears. Can faith, love, and sacrifice overcome unrelenting evil, or will the Anderwalds remain forever wretched and undone?

The Wretched and Undone is a sweeping historical-fiction novel set in the heart of the Texas Hill Country and inspired by real people and actual events. Set in Bandera Texas this book begins at the Frontier Times Museum. Then you will recognize places like St. Stanislaus and the Medina River. Names such as Anderwald, Standard, Kalka and more are blended through this fictional tale that is captivating from the first page.

The Frontier Times Museum welcomes novelist, J. E. Weiner, on Thursday, June 12th, for an author’s meet and greet from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. Heralded as "a genre-bending thrill ride through Old Texas," the novel was named a Killer Nashville Top Pick for 2024 and a Claymore Award Finalist for Best Southern Gothic.  In reviewing the novel, Adam Van Winkle, editor-in-chief at Cowboy Jamboree Press, stated, “A rattlesnake falls from the church rafters [St. Stanislaus], and from there, J. E. Weiner unwinds a scorching Southern gothic tale… Her generation-by-generation saga of the Anderwald family across the tumult of the late nineteenth century is told with true authenticity of voice and place. Her characters are so well crafted they crawl off the page. The novel's dark edges are absolutely gripping. A finer piece of historical fiction I cannot recall."

The book places historic Bandera and the Texas Hill Country in the spotlight. Come and see if your family is a character in the book, which will be available for purchase at the event.  Wine and refreshments will be served.  This event is free and open to the public. The museum is located at 510 13th Street, Bandera, Texas.  For more information, call 830-796-3864.
