Larry Nolen
San Antonio native Larry Nolen calls himself "a little old poor boy from Los Angeles Heights." That "little old poor boy" made about 80 records, had over 50 Grand Ol' Opry appearances, played on bills with another young upstart, Elvis Presley, introduced hit songs like "Ramblin' Rose" and "If I Needed You," and was inducted into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame, the Texas Swing Hall of Fame and the Bandera Music Hall of Fame as a Living Legend. Nolen began playing guitar at the age of 12. In the 1940's Smiley Whitley, a father figure to the boy, had a radio show and Nolen often skipped school to hear Whitley and his band, The Texans. "There was a terrible snow storm (one day) in San Antonio," Nolen said. "Never saw anything like it, and I was the first one at the studio." Several musicians never made it and Whitley told Nolen to get a guitar and sing. Nolen has kept singing since. Nolen has been produced by Ray Baker (George Strait's producer) and Porter Waggoner and recorded by Columbia in Nashville. He's worked with Slim Whitman, Jim Reeves, Roger Miller, Marty Robbins and his idol, Hall of Famer Hank Thompson.
