John Douglas "BUD" Fitzpatrick
Bud Fitzpatrick John Douglas “Bud” Fitzpatrick was born in Minnesota in 1916, but he arrived in Texas on the back of a cowboy’s horse smack dab in the middle of a real, old time cattle drive. Sickly as a child, Fitzpatrick spent a lot of time in bed drawing, mainly cowboys and horses, honing artistic skills he’d tap into as an adult. Advised to move south for his health, the family headed to Texas, getting stuck behind a big cattle drive at the state line. The trail boss saw Bud and pulled him out of the car and placed him on the front of his horse. It set the tone for the rest of Bud Fitzpatrick’s life. “As I . . . looked through the ears of that horse . . . I knew right then I never wanted to do anything except be a cowboy.” He went on to trained horses and work ranches. He became highly respected as a horseshoer for performance and Standardbred race horses, handmaking shoes and working racetracks from California to Ohio. He also holds membership #1114 in the Cowboys’ Turtles Association, the first organized association of rodeo cowboys, preceding the RCA and the current PRCA.
